An internet survey carried out by Angus Reid Public Opinion company at the end of January demonstrated that Americans prefer independence for Puerto Rico instead of turning the island into a state — 21 percent of the 1008 polled, whom are panelists from Springboard American, stated that they favored the island becoming the 51st state of the Union. However, 23 percent of those polled said they would favor Puerto Rico becoming an independent country.
Of those polled, 32 percent preferred the current political relationship between the island and the United States. This was the majority option chosen between Republicans and Democrats. Notwithstanding, among Republicans and independents, 25 percent favored independence. That same percentage, in the case of  Democrats, favored statehood for the island. People between 18 and 34 years, preferred the separation of the island from the United States. Men favored the status quo more so than women. The survey had a 3.1 percent margin of error.

There was a time when economic support was a strong argument in PR for the status quo or perhaps even more with statehood.

Thanks to Obama and national debt, those arguments read two ways: One, support will be cut by those trying to contain debt; or two, increased by those willing to print money to give to all until it is worthless.

Either way is the strongest argument for independence if PR can learn to use vertical farming technology to feed its people and survive without worthless Yankee money.
