76-year-old hit, killed by ambulance, woman shot
A 76-year-old man who was rushed to the hospital after being run over on Tuesday by an ambulance in the Juana Díaz toll booth died Wednesday of the injuries he sustained while crossing the high speed lane.
The man was identified as William C. Almodóvar Montalvo, a resident of Sabana Grande, who stopped his vehicle at the toll booth station of the Luis A. Ferré Expressway apparently to use the bathroom or buy a snack and crossed all the lanes of the highway at 12:20 p.m. on Tuesday.
Almodóvar Montalvo was struck by an oncoming 1998 Ford Econoline ambulance belonging to Vargas Ambulance service and driven by Diana I. González Vanwiskle, from Juana Díaz toward Santa Isabel on the highway, police said.
González Vanwiskle, who was driving in the electronic prepaid toll lane, stopped in the crash scene and transported the injured pedestrian to the San Cristóbal Hospital in Ponce, where he was pronounced dead at 3:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
The accident was investigated by Salinas Turnpike patrolman Luis Dávila and Assistant District Attorney Carlos González.
The victim was identified as Carlos Quiñones Sánchez, 30, a resident of the Guarico ward in Vega Baja, who was riding a 2006 JM Star 150R motorcycle when he was shot 10 times.
According to the preliminary police investigation, the victim was allegedly shot by another motorcycle rider who remained unidentified.
Police recovered from the victim’s motorcycle a ski mask, duct tape, a pair of scissors and a BB gun.
There have been 777 homicides so far this year, 77 more than during the same period last year, according to police statistics.
Meanwhile, another man who was wounded in Río Piedras on October 27 died on Wednesday.
The victim was identified as William Díaz Guzmán, 27, a resident of the Caimito sector of Río Piedras, who was shot at 12:10 a.m. two weeks ago while on the intersection of road PR-1 and the Camino Los Cruces way in Caimito.
Díaz Guzmán had been rushed to the Río Piedras Medical Center with bullet wounds to his forearm, hip and abdomen.
In other police news, Oscar Torres Molina, 45, a resident of Humacao, was charged with committing lewd acts against an 8-year-old boy two years ago.
Torres Molina posted a $1,000 bond imposed by Judge Rosa del Carmen Benítez and was set free.
The incident was reported at 8:19 p.m. on Tuesday and the suspect, identified as Eduardo Polanco Polanco, fled the scene and has not been apprehended.
The incident was reported while the couple was arguing.
The woman was rushed to the San José quarter Diagnostic and Treatment Center and referred to the Río Piedras Medical Center.
Police said the incident happened in front of the children of the couple, ages 12 and 2.
Another domestic violence incident was reported in Jayuya. The suspect, Damián Soto Rivera, 42, a resident of the La Montaña public housing project in Jayuya, was incarcerated in the Las Cucharas ward jail in Ponce, in lieu of $5,000 bail for allegedly abusing his 38-year-old wife.
